Blogger vs WordPress vs Wix: What Makes Sense for a Small Business?

Think about it like building a house.
Before you put up the walls, you need a place to build.
The same thing applies to a website or business blog.
There are many platforms we could use. But we don't want to choose one just because it is popular.
We want to know:
• How much will it cost?
• How easy is it to use?
• Can we change it when we need to?
• Can we add our own code?
• Can it grow with the business?
• Will it work well for a small business in South Africa?
For this build, we looked at three options: Blogger, WordPress and Wix.
1. Blogger

Why we considered it:
• Free hosting
• Very low running costs
• Fast
• Stable
• Easy to publish content
• We can work with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• We can connect our own domain
The biggest challenge?
The standard designs can look very basic.
To make it look and work the way we want, we need to do some of the work ourselves.
2. WordPress
WordPress is one of the most widely used website platforms.
Why we considered it:
• Many designs and themes
• Many plugins
• Lots of SEO tools
• Very flexible
• Can be used to build almost any type of website
But there is a cost.
You normally need hosting, and you need to keep the website, themes and plugins updated.
More flexibility can also mean more things to manage.
3. Wix
Wix lets you build a website using visual tools.
You can move things around and build a website without writing much code.
Why we considered it:
• Easy to use
• Good looking templates
• Fast to set up
• Hosting is included
The trade-off is that you pay a monthly fee for the platform, and you have less control than when working directly with your own code.
So, what did DML choose?
For the DML Business Blog, we chose Blogger.
Not because Blogger is the best platform for every business.
It is because it makes sense for what we are building right now.
We wanted something that is:
Low cost.
Fast.
Stable.
Easy to run.
And flexible enough for us to customize.
We also wanted to learn by building.
So instead of paying for a lot of tools we may not need, we decided to start simple and build from there.
The important lesson
There is no one platform that is perfect for every business.
A small business does not always need the most expensive or most powerful platform.
Sometimes, starting simple and building properly is enough.
And that is exactly what we are doing with DML.
